Postal Mail is not a thing of the past. Email may be quicker, but postal mail is still needed, and nowadays can be a novelty. How do you give your mail a better shot of being read? Try these ideas from me and this helpful article.
Mail that Gets Opened.
- Personalize Your Mailing. Nothing gets noticed more than a hand-addressed envelope. If you can’t do that, you can choose a mailing service that offers automatic personalization.
- Brand It. A generic envelope is likely to get tossed.
- Add Mystery! Try making your envelope a curiosity so they will open it to find out more.
- Require a Signature. (Could not open something you had to sign for?) It makes your mail look important.
- Double Check Your List! When you send a big mailing, make sure your list is up-to-date. Mailing to a person who left the company two years ago does not create a shining first impression. Verify the information on your list by calling (best option), checking LinkedIn or their website.
Mail that Makes an Impact.
Once you’ve gotten them to look at and open your mail, don’t forget these basics to get better results.
- Have a Purpose for the Mailing. Your mailing has a job to do. What is the mailing’s job precisely? (Make a sale? Get an appointment?) Make your message clear and use a call to action, so they know what problem you solve and how to get your services. Your call-to-action may include an incentive and deadline: “Order by Friday to get a gift!”
- Include a Gift. Who doesn’t love presents? Choose something that aligns with the topic and your brand.
- Use Color and Images. People process images faster than text. Let them know what your mailing is about at a glance.
